2025 WLR Network Shutdown

Introducing the All IP Future Network

Openreach are modernising the way they deliver telephone services in the UK and have announced the closure of their Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) resulting in the withdrawal of their Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) products in December 2025.  Openreach will stop supplying new WLR products by September 2023.

Running in conjunction with the WLR network shutdown is the transition to a full fibre infrastructure (an All IP Future Network).

The shutdown covers a number of products including: analogue lines and associated services e.g. lift, alarm & voice lines, ISDN2, ISDN30 and broadband.

What does this mean?

Business users will no longer have access to traditional telephone lines or ISDN and will therefore need to implement a VoIP solution.  Instead of plugging phones or phone systems into a socket on the wall, the connection will be to a router with an active broadband data connection.

For many companies IP telephony is far more cost-effective and flexible than traditional analogue phone lines and ISDN digital channels.

Either upgrade to the latest hosted cloud phone system for a simple low cost rental per user, to benefit from all of the latest unified communications features, or alternatively you can even keep your existing phone system and use one of our SIP gateways to replace your ISDN.

We can advise on the solutions available to you and the correct deployment of these to ensure that effective call quality is always maintained.
